There are two general categories of fans, which are the centrifugal flow and the axial flow fans.

Centrifugal Fans

In centrifugal flow types fans, the direction of airflow changes twice during operation. The first is when entering and when leaving the system. In this case, they are further classified into the forward curved, backward curved, inclined and the radial types.

Axial Flow Fans

In axial fans the air enters and exits the fan with no particular changes in the direction. They are also classified as propeller, tube axial and vane axial fans.

Industrial Axial Fans

They are also referred to as the axial blowers and they utilize a propeller to direct air into the fan and discharge it in the same axial direction. Axial fans are mainly used in exhaust of dirty air or fumes from production processes such as paint sprays operation. They are very effective in supply of fresh air, spot cooling of people, in rooms and machinery areas. They generally handle air in low pressure and may be produced as both direct driven by motor or belt driven models.

They have a set of various designs of wheels that draw air into the inlet, “of the housing”; the air goes over the wheel and then discharged at angle of 90 degrees. They are made of fabricated steel, stainless steel or cast aluminium.

The radial types are regarded as industrial workhorses due to their high static presures of up to 1400 mm wc. They are also efficient in handling contaminated air streams. They are also suited for areas with high tempratures.
