Air Pollution Control Equipment

How to Choose Air Pollution Control Equipment for Your Industry?

Systems for reducing pollution are essential in the modern world. Both organic and man-made sources contribute to the generation of air pollution. The pollutants produced by both mobile and stationary sources have the potential to have negative effects on the atmosphere, the immediate environment, and human life, including raising the average global temperature, reducing atmospheric visibility, deteriorating air quality, and having an impact on human health. Since industries emit a lot of air pollution, it becomes extremely important for an industry owner to install air pollution control equipment in the facility which not only controls air pollution in the industry but also save human lives.

Since there are many types of air pollution control systems available, it becomes difficult for a newbie to understand each of them and select the one for their industry. In this article, we will discuss the detailed working of air pollution control systems and their different types which will help you to select the right one for your industry.

Industry-specific pollution requirements and relevant regulations

In India, the industrial sector is a substantial source of stack emissions, ranging from small, centralised facilities like coal-fired thermal power plants and oil refineries to big, localised sources like brick kilns and diesel generator sets. Industry emission standards therefore have a significant part to play in lowering emissions and enhancing air quality.

The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1981 lays out the legal framework for the formulation of emission standards for industrial sectors, and the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986 expands on it. To lower the amount of pollution emitted from industrial sources, the Indian government establishes emission regulations. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) are jointly in charge of directing the creation and application of these standards. These are the minimum national criteria, although the SPCBs have the power to impose stricter requirements if necessary. However, there are very few instances where this has actually been the case.

Types of Air Pollution Control Technologies Available

Air pollution control equipment manufacturers in India make different types of air pollution control equipment which cater different industrial needs. Since air pollution control technologies are the need of the hour, every industry uses them. Different available technologies are

  • Scrubbers

Industrial air scrubbers are some of the most frequently used air pollution control tools in manufacturing and processing facilities. They work by physically removing gases and particulates from industrial emissions, like smokestack exhaust (in the case of exhaust air scrubbers) before they are released into the atmosphere.

  • Air Filters

In order to capture and remove dry particles and contaminants from the air passing through them, such as dust, pollen, microorganisms, chemicals, etc., air filters use a particular type of filtering medium, such as cloth, sintered metal, ceramic, etc. To improve the air quality in the workplace and eliminate contaminants from exhaust air, these devices are used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

  • Cyclones

Cyclones, also known as cyclone dust collectors, are air pollution control tools that separate dry particulate matter from gaseous pollutants in a manner similar to air filters. However, cyclones use centrifugal force to collect and remove particulates rather than filtration media.

  • Electrostatic Precipitators

Similar to air filters and cyclones, electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are air pollution control tools used to gather and remove particulate matter, such dust, from industrial emissions and exhaust. To establish a large static electrical potential difference between the charging electrodes and the collecting plates, ESPs use transformers. Particulates receive an electrical charge as gas streams move between the two parts, which draws the particulate matter to the collecting plates.

  • Mist Collectors

Mist collectors, often referred to as mist or moisture eliminator filters, are air pollution management tools that take away moisture and vapour from gas streams, such as smoke, oil, mist, and so on. The liquid droplets are separated from the gas using fine mesh filters, which are then collected in a different chamber for processing and, possibly, recovery and reuse.

  • Incinerators

Devices called incinerators use combustion to convert pollutants into non-toxic byproducts. These devices are widely used in a number of industrial applications to maintain air quality and control gas emissions by converting VOCs, hydrocarbons, and other dangerous air pollutants (HAP) into harmless compounds, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and oxygen.

  • Catalytic Reactors

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, also known as catalytic reactors, are air pollution control technologies frequently used to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions caused by the combustion of fossil fuels in industrial applications.

  • Biofilters

To reduce and remove water-soluble chemicals, biofilters use microorganisms like bacteria and fungi as part of their air pollution management process. Biofilters eliminate pollutants to lessen their presence in industrial emissions and exhaust, much like incineration systems do.

Efficiency and Performance of Air Pollution Control Systems

The regulation of air pollutants from different industries is made possible by properly constructed air pollution control devices. To monitor the performance of these devices, periodic review is necessary. It is required to work with different  industries to assess the suitability of installed devices, ensuring that they adhere to regulatory standards and assisting them in system optimisation. The efficiency of air pollution control systems help industries to curb air pollution that is produced every day hence it is always advised to install these systems in different industries.
